FITNESS:

Senior FitPass: This program features low impact aerobic routines and gentle stretching and toning exercise. For those ages 62 and over and the disabled population. Passes may be purchased in units of 12 and 24 sessions. Classes meet Monday and Wednesday, 10 – 11 AM at Monmouth Court Community Center.

NEW!  Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program: People with Arthritis can Exercise using gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion. With the guidance of a certified Arthritis Foundation Instructor, you will learn exercises to maintain muscle strength and increase flexibility.

Chair Yoga: A class for senior adults where chairs are used to eliminate sitting on the floor for stabilization and deepening stretches. This allows those dealing with the effects of aging, living with chronic disability or surviving the effects of treatment for an illness to participate. The class consists of chi gong exercises, breathing exercises, sitting and standing yoga postures, tai chi and a guided relaxation. The goal is to increase energy, strength, balance, flexibility and relaxation. Limit: 20.

Ballroom Dancing (Senior and Adult program): At your next party, get off your seat and onto the floor and – DANCE! Learn the basics of Waltz, Swing, Foxtrot, Tango and the most popular Latin rhythms Merengue, Salsa and Cha Cha in a fun easy-going atmosphere. Come discover how wonderful dancing can feel. Partners are recommended but not required.

NEW – Israeli Folk Dance (Senior Program) The class will cover a range of classic Israeli Folk dances including Horas, Debkas and more. The dances are performed in a circle and are appropriate for all ages. Israeli Folk Dancing works the mind, the body and is a lot of fun. Limit: 20

ZUMBA GOLD – Senior Program: It is an innovative, fun and exciting program. It was designed for the active older adult, the true beginner, and/or people who are not used to exercising, or people who may be limited physically. The main difference between Zumba Gold and Zumba Basic is Zumba Gold is done at a lower intensity, not as fast, but it certainly is as fun. The same great Latin styles of music and dance are used.

Arthritis Water Workout: Ages 55 and over. Hosted by the West Essex YMCA, this water workout program is for men and women who have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis or osteoporosis. Done in shallow water, the program uses specific movements to help strengthen the bones and surrounding muscles to help alleviate the pain and stiffness of these conditions. Individuals with YMCA membership and non-Livingston residents not eligible. No charge, but pre-registration is required.

Project Healthy Bones – is a 24- week exercise and education program for older men and women who have osteoporosis, osteopenia or are at risk of developing the condition.  The exercises target the body’s larger muscle groups to improve posture, balance, strength, and flexibility.
Participants use ankle cuffs with varying weight pellets and hand weights for individualized progression. The education component focuses on the importance of exercise, nutrition, safety, medications, and lifestyle factors that relate to osteoporosis.  Each class is limited to 15 participants and is lead by two peer leaders.  Classes are held weekly and generally last about two hours.  Physician’s permission requird to participate.

Tai Chi for Health (Senior and Adult program)
Do you know that Tai Chi is the most popular form of exercise on the planet? Tai Chi is a form of qigong (energy cultivation). Based on martial arts movements, Tai Chi provides training in proper body mechanics and natural alignment. It fosters a calm body and a peaceful state of mind, which are essential for cultivating healthy energy. Even though Tai Chi is slow and gentle and does not leave you breathless, by combining intense mental focus with deliberate, graceful movements, it improves muscle strength, flexibility, agility, balance and even aerobic conditioning. Can be done seated as well. Meditation in motion at its best! Wear loose fitting clothing and sneakers.

Neurobics 101 (Senior Program) Puzzles are a fantastic way to wake up the brain but they are not enough! Neurobics is a way to challenge your brain to develop new pathways. This class will utilize a variety of mental exercises designed to keep the brain alert and active. Mental stimulation and movement improves brain function and physical health Join in the exploration of novel movements, awareness, and sensory stimulation. All fitness levels. Wear comfortable clothing and walking foot gear. Limit: 10

Classical Music/Opera Lovers Club: Ages 62 and over. Open to any Livingston senior, this member run club will feature presentations, speakers, videos and musical recordings of group members favorite classical music pieces, composers and operas. The group will meet monthly and use a rotating schedule of members for the presentations. No expertise is required, just a love of classical music and opera.

Drop-In  Bridge - Bridge players may join others to play bridge on Mondays at the Livingston Senior Community Center from 12:30PM to 3:00PM, year round (except on Township holidays).  This is a free drop-in program.  Knowledge of the game is required.  No instruction is provided or guaranteed.  No partners needed.

Drop-in Game Room & Library at the LSCC
Located in the lower level of the Livingston Senior/Community Center, the game room offers a pool table, table tennis table, card tables, table top shuffleboard and a large screen television. The Library features several computers with internet access and a nice variety of books and movies available for borrowing. Open most days between 9AM and 4PM. Occasional programming in the spaces may pre-empt the drop-in status. Please watch for signs.

Senior Transportation:
A transportation program is offered to Livingston residents 62 years of age and older and disabled residents 18 years of age and older to any Livingston location including Township meetings, Shop Rite, the Livingston Mall and the JCC in West Orange. The wheelchair accessible bus runs Monday—Friday between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm and a volunteer driven vehicle is available other days as needed.  Reservations may be made one week to twenty-four hours in advance of the desired ride.

NO SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS ARE AVAILABLE.

The service includes two rides per day, either one round trip to one location from one address and back or a drop-off at one address and pick-up at another address. Participants are responsible for finding their own transportation to a secondary pick-up location if desired.
