Adult Fitness
Adult FitPass: FitPasses are still being used for the following programs and may be purchased at Senior, Youth and Leisure Services (SYLS) in units of 12 or 24 sessions. When you attend a Cross Training, Shape Up or Step Class, the instructor will mark one space on your card. When the card is finished, buy another. Cross Training, Shape Up and Step Classes are held throughout the week and are open to individuals ages 18 and over. Adult FitPasses only accepted for these classes. Senior Fitness is held on Mondays and Wednesdays and is open to individuals ages 62 and over. Senior FitPass only accepted at these classes. Please note: there is no transference of cards between Adult Fitness classes and Senior Fitness classes.
All programs have maximum participation numbers due to space limitations. No guarantee of space availability is made by the instructor or SYLS.
Cross Training — A challenging and intensive workout program, the class includes sets of aerobic routines and basic steps for burning calories combined with concentrated weight routines for complete body sculpting. Steps, 1-lb weights and xertubes are provided.
Shape Up — A total body workout incorporating low impact routines, this class focuses on toning muscles, building strength and improving body flexibility.
Step Fitness — A high intensity, low impact aerobic program involving stepping on and off a height- adjustable platform. Height and intensity may be modified to suit one’s own ability level.
YOGA
Yoga is a system of stretching postures which tone and align the body and help the body absorb the effects of stress to balance and rejuvenate the body and calm the mind. Participants should dress in comfortable clothing. Please bring a yoga mat to each class and a yoga brick(s) if needed. Yoga belts are available if needed.
Level 1 This class is for beginners and people interested in a more gentle class. Emphasis will be on stretching, alignment relaxation.
Level 2 This class is for fit beginners and people interested in an active yoga class. Emphasis will be on stretching, strengthening, toning and relaxation.
20/20/20: This is a high energy class filled with 20 minutes of fun cardio vascular exercises followed by 20 minutes of intense muscle conditioning drills, and finishing with 20 minutes of yoga and pilates stretching techniques, including core stabilization. Limit 18
Pilates is an exercise program designed to increase flexibility, strengthen muscles and improve posture. There is a concentration on core strengthening and stabilization. The breathing techniques help balance the mind-body connection. People of all ages can do pilates as there are modifications for most exercises.
ZUMBA: Come join the fitness sensation that is sweeping the nation! Drawing on Latin dance moves, this fun and energetic dance fitness class is a great way to get in shape and have some fun. Limit: 24
Yogilates
A non-impact combination of Yoga and Pilates. Floor exercises combine dance moves that tone and lift while enhancing balance and agility. Using gentle Yoga postures you also work on improving your flexibility all in this one fusion class.
Aqua Zumba: (Summer only) Jump into the Latin-inspired, easy-to-follow, calorie-burning, dance fitness party that makes working out a splash. Class is held at Northland Pool. Limit: 20
Splashercise: Ages: 16+. (Summer only) This program features aerobic exercises and a total body workout in the water. In the event of rain, participants should wear sneakers to participate in an indoor aerobic class at Northland Recreation Center. Limit: 30
Inner Strength
This class is non cardio and can be done in bare feet or with socks combining Pilates and basic core conditioning. Students will achieve stronger abdominals, glutes and back muscles. Better posture is an added benefit. Please bring mat and either a set of 1 or 2 pound weights.
Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (Senior and Adult program)
People with Arthritis can Exercise using gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion. With the guidance of a certified Arthritis Foundation Instructor, you will learn exercises to maintain muscle strength and increase flexibility. (1-2lbs weights recommended)
Tai Chi for Health (Senior and Adult program)
Do you know that Tai Chi is the most popular form of exercise on the planet? Tai Chi is a form of qigong (energy cultivation). Based on martial arts movements, Tai Chi provides training in proper body mechanics and natural alignment. It fosters a calm body and a peaceful state of mind, which are essential for cultivating healthy energy. Even though Tai Chi is slow and gentle and does not leave you breathless, by combining intense mental focus with deliberate, graceful movements, it improves muscle strength, flexibility, agility, balance and even aerobic conditioning. Can be done seated as well. Meditation in motion at its best! Wear loose fitting clothing and sneakers.
Line Dancing (Senior and Adult program)
No more watching for you! Everyone can learn to line dance. Have fun and exercise while dancing to a variety of great country and popular songs. No partner needed!
NEW Israeli Folk Dance (Senior Program): The class will cover a range of classic Israeli Folk dances including Horas, Debkas and more. The dances are performed in a circle and are appropriate for all ages. Israeli Folk Dancing works the mind, the body and is a lot of fun. Limit: 20
Ballroom Dancing (Senior and Adult program)
At your next party, get off your seat and onto the floor and – DANCE! Learn the basics of Waltz, Swing, Foxtrot, Tango and the most popular Latin rhythms Merengue, Salsa and Cha Cha in a fun easy-going atmosphere. Come discover how wonderful dancing can feel. Partners are recommended but not required.
